Cian's internship with Flicker Bicycle Company has begun. He is shown here working on a practice project learning to work metal. He is shaping his fillet brazed weld on scrap tubing. The art here is to both work fast and precise. Precision is important visually and in order to preserve the integrity of the tubing itself. Even slight abrasions into the steel tubing at this point can compromise its structural integrity.



When the weld is finished perfectly, with smooth, symmetric and fair radiuses, the eye does not stumble on any "hard" spots, and the frame appears simple and clean. At this point in finishing a handmade frame, the craftsman must apply skills in order to create a visually beautiful and structurally integrated frame. I didn't know Salsa made bikes until Ryan, creator of Flicker Bikes and author of Velokos: Mountain, installed AutoCAD on my computer and gave me my first homework assignment: recreate the Salsa Fargo.



The Fargo is a mountain frame with drop bars (another weird thing Salsa does that I didn't know about. Call me inexperienced). To recreate the fargo, I found its geometry (angles, lengths, and technical measurements). Unfortunately, due to the fact that salsa owns the bike design and does not want people to copy it, the geometry was not complete enough to exatly replicate the Fargo.
