Gas up your chainsaw...

Moots had fun putting this bike together for the show. I'm not sure if this is one of their 2013 lineup, but you're sure to have fun with Bike, chainsaw and beer! You're in for surprises at the 2013 North American Handmade Bicycle Show in Denver. This is a relatively narrow tire snow bike. The snow bikes have a very large presence at this years show. www.moots.com

Trail Courtesy Sign
There’s a certain magical quality to the long trails that exist in the US. These trails cover hundreds or thousands of miles through unpopulated and wilderness tracts of land. Embarking on these trails for days or weeks at a time provides a traveler with a lifetime of memories. Albeit in my experience, these memories are both fond and less fond.

Fortunately for us Coloradans, we have close access to two long trails: the Colorado Trail (CT) and the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). Both pass through very sparsely populated and simply raw areas of the country, the CT from Denver to Durango and the CDT from the Boot Heel of New ...   read more...

city bike lane
Reflecting on my recent dealings with the DMV for both registering my truck and getting my pedicab license, I began to think to myself “What if I had to go through this process to be able to ride my bikes?” My immediate reaction to that line of thinking was utter disgust. Imagine having to take your bicycle through an inspection lane or having to register your bike and pay for access to riding on the road and bike paths.

While the thought of treating a bike like a car is troubling, it is also interesting to consider how much free access bikes have on the road relative to cars whose drivers have to pay for all of that access. Bikers are allowed to travel on practically any public road. Some roads have even been modified with bike lanes to give riders safer access to public roads. And all this access without registration fees, parking ...   read more...

road bike frame being built
It's a snowy day here in Denver. Weather forecasters have said we're going to get between a foot and two feet of snow in the Denver Metro Area. There are about 8 inches of snow on the ground outside the shop currently.

Despite the snow, I got a bit done in the shop today. While this may not seem like such a huge feat (and I guess it really isn't) the shop doesn't currently have a heater. It's on the shopping list, but always gets bumped to lower priority than the tools and almost everything else on the shopping list. After all, I don't miss the heater until it's cold out.

Even though most people think Denver is cold and snowy all winter long, it's not. But that's a secret, so please don't tell anyone. The average December-February temperature is somewhere around 45 ...   read more...

DMV Ticket
I really, really loathe driving. I was reminded of this hatred today by having to spend most of my morning getting an emissions test and sitting at the DMV waiting to get new plates. These occur at two separate places, mind you.

Even with the relatively very small amount of money I have to shell out for testing, plates, etc. on my (new to me) 1979 Toyota Pickup, I’m still amazed that I’m willing to spend as much time and money as I do on motorized transportation. Despite my whining, everything went pretty smoothly at emissions and the DMV. I’ve probably spent no more than four hours on the whole process, including driving time. As far as the financial side goes, here’s a rundown of what I’ve spent since I got the Pickup:
  • Purchase price of truck: $750
  • Repairs and maintenance: ...   read more...
